Kent/Sussex defeated by Hampshire in 2nd XI Championship

22 Apr 2021

A Kent/Sussex team were beaten by ten wickets in their 2nd XI Championship fixture against Hampshire at the Polo Farm Sports Ground in Canterbury this week.

The composite side won the toss and elected to bat first, making 304. Ali Orr was the top-scoring Sussex representative with 49 at the top of the order. There were half-centuries for Hamidullah Qadri (75) and Sussex pathway product Tawanda Muyeye (68), who signed for Kent at the start of the season.

In reply, Hampshire were reduced to 112 for six, but 149 for James Fuller and fifties for Saf Imtiaz and Keith Barker helped the visitors to 391 all out. Among the Sussex bowlers, there was a wicket each for Jamie Atkins, Mitch Claydon, pathway seamer Joe Sarro and Will Beer. Kent off-spinner, Marcus Riordan took 3 for 54 and seamer Nathan Gilchrist 2 for 73.

Hampshire’s opening pair of Ryan Stevenson and Scott Currie blew the top order away in Kent/Sussex’s second innings. At one stage the neighbours were 28 for 6, and it was only thanks to 34 for Gilchrist and 22 for Will Harby that they reached 99 all out.

That left Hampshire needing 13 for victory, which they reached without alarm.

A full scorecard is available here.

Kent and Sussex now go their separate ways in the 2nd XI Championship, with Sussex taking on Surrey at The 1st Central County Ground in their next fixture from Tuesday 4th May.
