Different format, another enormous innings for Travis Head

Sussex's overseas player for the 2021 season, Travis Head made his second big score in as many matches by plundering 142 from only 86 deliveries as South Australia fell 14 runs short of chasing down the 370 runs they had been set for victory by Western Australia in their opening match of the March Cup one-day competition in Perth on Tuesday.

Travis scored 15 fours and six sixes on his way to eighth List A century as Jason Gillespie's men were bowled out for 356 with four balls of their 50 overs remaining. The South Australia captain had added 226 for the second wicket with opener Harry Nielsen, putting their side in a position where they needed 90 runs from 73 balls with eight wickets in hand. But when Travis was run out off the last ball of the 38th over, the chase faltered.

Travis' knock follows on from the mammoth 223 he made in the Sheffield Shield against the same opposition last week, a thrilling encounter that saw Western Australia hang on for the draw with just one wicket remaining in their second innings. 

It is expected that Travis will join Sussex after the conclusion of an Australian domestic season extended as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The Sheffield Shield regular season is due to finish on Wednesday 7th April, with the final between the top two sides taking place between Thursday 15th and Sunday 18th April. Having completed five matches and with three rounds to come South Australia are bottom of the six-team table.

South Australia’s final regular season match in the one-day competition - the Marsh Cup – is scheduled for Wednesday 7th April with the final set for Sunday 11th April.
